A solid rivet represents one of the earliest and most reliable types of mechanical fasteners. It features a solid stem and a head, which may be spherical, tapered, flush, level, or egg-shaped.

During installation, solid rivets are inserted into a pre-made hole, and then a hammer or rivet tool is employed to permanently reshape the straight portion into the desired head configuration.
